Nine Acceptable Forms of Identification (ID)

The types of paper identification documents listed below may be presented to a Notary Public to establish identity. These paper identification documents must be current. (California Civil Code section 1185(b)(3).)
- An identification card or driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles; or
- A driver's license issued by another state or by a Canadian or Mexican public agency authorized to issue drivers' licenses; or
- A United States Passport; or
- A passport issued by a foreign government that has been stamped by the U.S. Immigration or Naturalization Service or its predecessor agency, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service; or
- An identification card issued by another state (this does not include an identification card issued by Canadian or Mexican public agency); or
- A military identification card (if all required information is present)
- An employee identification card issued by an agency or office of a California City, or California County , or the State of California; or
- An inmate identification card issued by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, if the inmate is in custody in California state prison; or
- Any form of inmate identification issued by a Sheriff's Department, if the inmate is in custody in a local mention facility.
