Nine Acceptable Forms of Identification (ID)

The types of paper identification documents listed below may be presented to a Notary Public to establish identity. These paper identification documents must be current. (California Civil Code section 1185(b)(3).)

  1. An identification card or driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles; or 
  2. A driver's license issued by another state or by a Canadian or Mexican public agency authorized to issue drivers' licenses; or 
  3. A United States Passport; or
  4. A passport issued by a foreign government that has been stamped by the U.S. Immigration or Naturalization Service or its predecessor agency,  the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service; or 
  5. An identification card issued by another state (this does not include an identification card issued by Canadian or Mexican public agency); or
  6. A military identification card (if all required information is present)
  7. An employee identification card issued by an agency or office of a California City, or California County , or the State of California; or 
  8. An inmate identification card issued by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, if the inmate is in custody in California state prison; or
  9. Any form of inmate identification issued by a Sheriff's Department, if the inmate is in custody in a local mention facility.
